Imagine the scene. A stinking hot Friday in the city, spent cleaning and ironing without air conditioning in the house. Tossing up for dinner between Encasa and Miso. Aside from the fact that it was closer, Miso won out because it had air-con. But when we arrived, we found plenty of other good reasons to eat at Miso….

Agedashi Tofu, $3.80

Okay, not just that, that was just a teaser. We ordered agedashi tofu and soft shelled crab because we were worried the main meal wouldn’t be big enough. Tofu was…tofu. Nicely battered and crispy out of the soup/sauce, when drenched in the sauce it absorbed the dashi and soy based mixture nicely.

Soft Shelled Crab, $6.80

The soft shelled crab at Miso over the time we’ve been here has been disappointing. It has a tendency to be too dry and crispy – especially compared to say, the succulent, juicy crab at Sushi Rio or Waqu’s soft shell crab taco. But then, we didn’t come here for the crab…

Chirashizushi, $36, serving two.

We came here for this monster. Six pieces of salmon, four pieces of surf clam, eight pieces of tuna, kingfish, garfish, eel, prawn, and squid – count them, that’s 58 pieces of sushi goodness, the equivalent of about 29 plates at our favourite sushi train. Nestled on perfectly cooked and seasoned sushi rice, and scattered with humungous salmon roe (look at the first picture) and flying fish roe, this was Miso’s special offering for Chinese New Year, and is available until the end of next weekend (1/2/09).

At first, I wasn’t sure whether Tim’s more or less continous happy dance was because of the soft jazz music in the background, or the quality of the squid, but a few bites later, I was left in no doubt. Almost all the fish on offer was fresh and firm with bright bold colours, with the exception of the tuna which seemed a little anaemic and was slightly disappointing. Ginger and wasabi cleansed the palate, alongside a warming miso soup.

For me, my happy dance, characterised by much camera use, was triggered by the beautiful presentation and colours of the dish. Featuring a salmon sashimi rose in the middle, the other slices of sashimi were scattered like petals around, with dew drops of salmon roe. For dessert, we were given two scoops of vanilla icecream and fortune cookies! The waitress was happy to teach us some japanese, and tell us about this dish, which apparently has only been ordered three or four times a night since it was offered, which is a shame, as we think it is good value. I believe Tim might be paying another visit to rectify that on Tuesday….

Oh! My fortune read “Trust your intuition” and Tim’s “Business opportunity coming up”.

So you might have noticed the renovations. The walls got a new coat of paint, and everything has been jazzed up. Big thanks and round of applause to Ms Jen for putting up with our constant and often confusing demands. I love the flying cupcake ^___^!

So, to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and our new launch….Chuc Mung Nam Moi! Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu! Gong Hei Fat Choi! Happy New Year!

  3. Your site looks great guys! Well done :) And miso looks like a great find. In this weather, air conditioning is definitely a criteria for choosing a place. I really like that second last photo of the last piece of the Chirashizushi.
