So I was walking through the jungle, and what did I see…?

A great big Lion RAWWWRRRING at ME!

This is Ryan Lyon, the realisation of one of the many sketches I do to stimulate my learning in class. I had drawn him alongside Lisa Zeebra, Gerald Giraffe and Choco Cow in a fit of inspiration in a developmental psychology lecture (^___^;;;) and as part of holiday baking, decided to challenge myself by playing with royal icing.

Of course, I probably bit off more than I could chew, especially when I didn’t realise the piping bag was leaking from the top…down my leg….good thing they’re old holey jeans =_=;;

I have to admit though, they turned out far better than I had anticipated, even if we did come across problems with running out of red food colouring and so frantically diluting the remnants to form his orange mane. I think it looks rather fashionable – bayalage, much? I do need to buy some proper colouring gels though, just to get bolder colours, without the thinning of the royal icing.

The cookies were especially yummy, I added a hint of cinnamon to give them some spice and it certainly added to the overall effect, giving a tinge of mystique.

Chomp!

Believe me when I say these cookies brought out the wildside in all of us. I mean, just watch Tora!

And yes, I was quite devastated at the loss of my cookie!

Recipe for the cookies from bakedbree – I just added a half tsp of cinnamon powder. Royal icing can be made by whisking about 2 cups of pure icing sugar into 2 egg whites. You’ll want a fairly stiff icing to pipe the outline, before letting it dry and flooding with a more dilute version. For Ryan Lyon, we outlined the yellow face and ears, then filled the yellow face, then piped the orange mane and filling it with dilute orange and detailing the nose on the relatively set face. The green eyes were then added with a toothpick with some very intensely coloured royal icing. I’ll think about making a tutorial when I have more hands free to take photos – i.e. when I learn not to drip icing down my jeans ;)
