Bagels

In high school, I used to believe that I attracted damaged people. You know the type – the ones who didn’t ‘fit’ into the popular group or were shunned by the grade for being too weird. And before you assume that this was teenage arrogance speaking, I wasn’t excluding myself from the list, because I had plenty of issues too (and was shunned by the grade for being too weird). But after running away after receiving a painfully awkward request for a kiss, realising that perhaps people actually had reason to hate the bad boy that everyone hated (but that didn’t mean that you should hate him too), and accidentally trampling over several hearts along the way (“We’re such great friends, I’m so happy to have you in my life, how awkward would it be if you liked me?” “so…um…about that…” – ironically, Tim was one of these), I was convinced that I had an invisible shouting neon-lit arrow above my head that said “please, if you have problems, come this way!”

With a somewhat wiser perspective, I wonder if that was actually the case. Perhaps rather than being the beacon, I was the one who was drawn. After all, these so-called ‘damaged’ people turned out to be jewels when they cleaned up a bit and found their paths in life. The broken hearts went on to top their chosen university courses or went off to pursue a fulfilling career outside of the mainstream, and I learned that rough edges could do an awfully good job at buffering my own blemishes. Sure, I’d received a few nicks and dents along the way. But the end product seems to have worked out well enough. At the very least, I’m fixed enough to be able to acknowledge that most of the time.

I learned that beat-boxing damages vocal cords, that peer pressure is a really double-edged sword that only you end up getting hurt by, that you probably shouldn’t date bad boys and believe you can reform them, and that if you give someone a chance, you will always learn something useful. That those awkward, sweet, quiet, loud, arrogant (What is it that Tim always says? “It’s only arrogance if you’re wrong”), completely incompatible people can in fact be the ones who complete you in the moments they spend in your life and make you shine. That you should “never judge a book (or publication) by its cover” – regardless of whether the abstract or blurb sounds promising or not, because the insides might be full of it, really really useful, or more confusingly, looks and acts silly, but is actually very wise. And the best way to find out is to try it anyway.

Bagels

And so I’d encourage you to try these not-so-attractive bagels out. They’re not perfect. They won’t sit nicely along the polished croissants and shiny patisserie goods. They have their sticking out bits, and unsightly bulges, and falling off bits. They’re a bit -Ok, a lot– uneven. Some have holes, some don’t. Some fell apart along the way and don’t quite count as circles. They don’t all fit onto a tray together. But, they do work. With schmears of cream cheese and cucumber crunch, or cinnamon sugar and maple syrup cream cheese, their value is worth so much more than their appearance.

Bagels

This is my entry for October’s Have You Eaten? Baking Club. You can find the recipe for the bagels here. I chose to top my bagels with sesame seeds, and cinnamon sugar. A cream cheese schmear is very easily made by combining maple syrup with a cream cheese spread.
