Brioche Scrolls
Sunday, 14 Jun 09
Once upon a time, back in those primary school days of packed lunches, bread had to be white, soft, crust free, and filled with Nutella and most definitely not Vegemite (very unAustralian of me, I know). Now, my tastes have grown up just a little – brown bread is acceptable, I don’t mind eating crusts (though my hair hasn’t gotten any curlier) and my sandwich repertoire now includes cold meats and *gasp* green salads. Mind you, I still don’t like Vegemite.
Buying a bread-maker has also helped the family expand their mindsets just a little. Now, we aren’t limited to buying bread, and have experimented quite happily with a 10kg bag of flour to produce all sorts of delicious breads. These brioche rolls and scrolls were my first attempt at shaping the dough, which led to some interesting results. It’s almost like a grown up version of playdough, except stickier and more yielding. And definitely more satisfying.
Because my childhood sweet tooth has extended far into my teens (and will probably extend into my 20s), these were filled with Nutella or strawberry jam. Deliciously buttery, with spikes of sugar sweetness, they made great snacks, especially hot out of the oven. No recipe, I’m not entirely pleased with the texture yet.

Many apologies for my extended silence – I feel bad, because I’ve been studying and neglecting this and all my favourite blogs. Not to mention my usb drives have recently disappeared from my computer, and I’m hesitant to touch them until after exams, just in case my laptop implodes and takes all my notes with it. I promise I’ll be back, once exams are over.
BTW: You can find me on Twitter as wayitcrumbles, just in case you didn’t know that. I’m also getting my blog engineer, Ms Jen, to insert an email address on the sidebar once she emerges from the pile of notes she is buried under, but until then, thewayitcrumbles[ a t ]yahoo[ d o t ]com…!

Good luck with your exams! I’m impressed you can be bothered to post at all, I used to be such a hectic mess during exam periods. Those brioche rolls look so good, especially the filled ones- I would love one of those right now with some hot tea!

Haha I also hoped my hair would turn curly if I ate my crusts. Meanwhile my friends are now straightening their hair lol. They look lovely and buttery! :)

Good luck with exams! I’ve only just discovered brioche in the last 12 months, not sure what rock I was hiding under because I’ve been missing out big time.
