The Best Meal We Had In New Zealand

I’ve been back for over a week now, and sitting on about…600? odd photographs from our adventures in New Zealand. I even started a post on our first few days in Christchurch…but never got around to finishing it after my net put its foot down and said it wasn’t going to post it. So I was petulant and pouted and said “fine” and gave it the silent treatment for a goodly while, until my conscience took over and pointed out that my few existing readers may be disappointed if I don’t post. So in appreciation of your patience and support, here is a quick post.
New Zealand scallops main – NZ$13
I’m starting at the end, rather than the beginning, but it is a fitting place to start, as it encapsulates what we found to be the best parts of the food side of our trip. The best places we ate at typically involved seafood, and small, surprising places. There was only one big hotel restaurant that really impressed us, but there were many little out of the way places that satisfied us, mind and body.
This was one of them. On the very last day, just a few hours before our flight, we walked over to the art centre in Christchurch, which set up a little market on Fridays. A little seafood stand caught our attention, advertising freshly prepared 100% NZ seafood, for very decent prices, considering the strength of the Aussie dollar. Hook, line and sinker.

Fresh plump scallops, sizzled over a searing hotplate, and finished with a hint of butter, lemon and salt and pepper. Juicy, succulent, flesh, with a caramelised exterior, served on a bed of crunchy salad with a soft roll or toasted bread to mop up the abundance of juices. Seriously good. I rationed out the six juicy scallops, ensuring each mouthful of my roll had a little bit, whilst reserving one fat scallop for a last gleeful mouthful. Yum.
Green-lipped mussel main – NZ$10
What you see in the photo is the mussel main diminished by our eager forks – it was only after 1 mussel had been devoured by each person that I realised I had forgotten to take a photo, so caught up were we in the seafood bliss. The mussels were steamed in their own juices, with a tantalising touch of chilli and garlic. I like my alliteration.
The friendly people here are open when the markets are open, which I, with the pathetic memory I have, have forgotten when. Buuuuut, as a little research has told me, the MarketSOLE which we attended is open from 12pm to 3pm every Friday in the Market Square, Worcester Blvd. Go me.
