Bacco Wine Bar Pasticceria
Wednesday, 28 Jul 10
It all started when they would whisper to each other during roll call in year 7, glancing over their shoulders at me and giggling. From there, I was nicknamed ‘Emo’, told to befriend a carrot (though at the time, innocent me didn’t quite get it) and laughed at for pronouncing ‘Salmon’ and ‘No’ strangely.
Oddly enough, Ms. Jen and Ms. Donut and I ended up being great friends. Together, we would scrape our tongues raw on sherbet lollipops at sports carnival, conspire to smash a whipped cream pie on the face of one of the boys and engage in outrageous behaviours that drove our boyfriends mad with envy…or so we would suggest anyway ;) We would also frequently visit Max Brenners in Parramatta after sport on Wednesdays, indulging our voracious sweet teeth and inducing sugar highs.
Cappuccino Tart
We’ve grown up a little, and while we don’t go around spraying whipped cream at each other anymore, we do still engage in activities which involve sugar, and usually, quite a lot of it. Visiting Bacco Pasticceria was one such occasion. It was a horribly wet and rainy day in the city, the sort of day where you can barely see 3 metres in front of you, and even if your umbrella doesn’t bow to the wind, you still end up drenched from waist down anyway. So it was a great relief to finally get to Chifley Plaza after walking from a delicious lunch Azuma Kushiyaki at Townhall.
We sat down at one of the tables and were promptly served. Ms. Donut’s cappuccino tart was devilishly rich and creamy. If you’ve ever tried Kopiko, an Asian-style coffee candy, this was that in tart form (ironically, another of those things we ate by the truckload in highschool, particularly around exam time). It was topped with cream, a chocolate truffle, praline and a candied apricot.
Pear and Caramel Gateaux
I was quite pleased with my gateaux, which had a layer of caramel mousse studded with poached pears, which melded beautifully with the milk chocolate mousse. Unfortunately, the pear on top wasn’t quite sweet enough for me, and the chocolate crackle-like base lacked crunch. I do like the presentation on the wooden boards though, it adds a lovely rustic touch.
Lemon Meringue Tart
Ms. Jen had a lemon meringue tart, because the shards on top looked so pretty! She was disappointed that the caramel wasn’t flavoured though, despite its rosy hue. The tart itself had a deliciously short and buttery crust, while the sweet, slightly crispy meringue and lemon curd are a classic, but lovely, combination.
Tiramisu
Mr Canon is also a great friend from high school, who also loves chocolate and sweets. This seems to be a trend with my friends, hmm…We visited again on another cold miserable day in the city, armed with our photographic weaponry and an appetite.

My tiramisu looked so striking in the display that I had to have it, even though I generally find tiramisu terribly rich. I’m a sucker for a pretty container and stencilled chocolate. The tiramisu was a classic example of the dish, rich coffee-soaked sponge fingers, sweetened cream, dusted generously with cocoa. I was happy that it wasn’t strongly alcoholic as some are, since I’m not a huge fan of the flavour of alcohol, but this one was just right. And yes, those are coffee beans on top. I did try.
Pannacotta
Mr. Canon’s pannacotta makes for a fine partner. Topped with a jewel-like array of mixed berries, in its container, it couldn’t really pass the infamous wobble test proposed by Chocolatesuze, but it was silky and creamy all the same, with just enough gelatine to be barely set. Specks of vanilla bean are always a good sign with pannacotta, and this was no exception. Yum!
Vanilla latte
After this and the tiramisu, I was completely coffee’d out. It was a fantastic vanilla latte though, not too bitter and perfectly sweetened for me (I’m a wuss when it comes to coffee =P).
Hot chocolate
…and me playing with a Canon in the background ;) This is why Mr. Canon has his name. When I was looking for a dSLR to buy, he threatened to disown me if I didn’t get a Canon. Ms. Jen threatened to disown me if I didn’t get a Nikon. Luckily, I’m still friends with both! I could see how good his camera is though and now have a massive case of gear envy.
Bacco Pasticceria is a great little place for meeting up over coffee or a quick bite to eat or some lovely desserts in the upper business end of town. And their takeaway boxes are pretty. *nodnod*
<sappiness> And needless to say, I heart my friends. </sappiness>

I still haven’t eaten here…walked passed quite a while ago but didn’t want to battle office lunch queues and crowds. But I do like the presentation on wooden boards as well – you can serve almost anything on them.
