Valentines Day 2010

Valentine’s Day. That special Hallmark occasion that people either love, (as an extra opportunity to do something special with the ones they love) or hate, as an overcommercialised, expensive, and indeed, isolating holiday (for the singles, at least). This year, it happened to clash with the Lunar New Year, meaning that even though Tim and I are in the former camp, we didn’t expect to be celebrating it on the 14th anyway. So an extraordinarily belated Happy New Year, Gung Hei Fat Choy, Chuc Mung Nam Moi, Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu, and so on! Good fortune, health, wealth and prosperity to you all =)

Not one to miss out on an opportunity to catch up with friends though, I decided to be (slightly more) organised (than usual) and make some treats for our SO’s (and families). It was a day of crafts, chocolates and cookies, with much gossip and hanging out with Miss M and Miss Smurfette.

By now, you must be wondering, where’s the food? We actually spent the first part of our day making boxes in which to hold the food. It was a simple process – buy cheap cardboard boxes from a discount/craft store, and decorate with the mountain of art supplies and paper I have lying around my room. You can probably tell, I love my japanese printed paper, and am always on the lookout for pretty patterns at a cheap price.

The product of our sweet sweet labour though was 6 boxes filled to the brim with tempered chocolate (yes, i managed it at last!), passionfruit marshmallows, white and milk chocolate truffles, and milk chocolate enrobed passionfruit truffles. While I won’t post all the recipes to those here, I can point you at Brownie Points Blog for the marshmallows, and Use Real Butter and Cooking for Engineers for the tempering method. The truffles were from Pierre Herme’s Chocolate Desserts.

We also attempted butter cookies, which turned out fairly decently, though it was difficult to pipe, because the mixture was quite thick. So this was one of…three pretty swirly roses, for the rest, we used a larger, easier piping tip.

So, random, really really late post over. Uni starts soon, and these holidays have flown by far too fast, but I have some posts lined up, promise!
