Mamak – Chinatown, Sydney

Our evening at Mamak started off with a bang. No, I wasn’t referring to the three fire-engines that screamed past, but rather, the sound of my head exploding as I took the first bite of the mee goreng. It was HOT!

I mean that in a good way. There are few places in Sydney that dish out authentic Malaysian street fare, and none with the cult following of Mamak. The name itself refers to the ubiquitous street-side food stalls of Malaysia, and, true to its name, Mamak offers quick, flavoursome food at very reasonable prices, and with some entertainment watching the roti makers flip large sheets of dough around! Although I suppose if you ask a Malaysian like Tim, they may rant about how in Malaysia you can get 5 to 10 of the same item for the prices. But I’d rather save on the plane fare ;)

mee goreng – $10.50

As you might have surmised, the mee goreng surprised me with its spiciness on this occasion, but it’s one of those dishes that I keep coming back for. With generous amounts of fish cake, prawns, egg and beansprouts, it is a flavour explosion, especially with a good squeeze of lime.

milo ais – $3.50

And if you’re like me and particularly susceptible to chilli, be sure to have a boyfriend with a glass of iced milo, to soothe the burn =) Sweetened with condensed milk, this is my favourite way to enjoy Milo.

roti canai – $5

Watching the roti makers in the open kitchen at the front of the restaurant, it appears they stretch the dough a little first using oil, and then spin it skilfully through the air to stretch it almost paper thin. It is then folded in to make the delicious flaky layers roti is known for, and then grilled on a hot plate. The roti canai is the basic roti, and is scrunched up, separating all the lovely flaky layers, then served with two types of curry and sambal.

roti bawang – $6

The roti bawang has lashings of red onion, which provide a lovely sweetness to the bread. I’m particularly a fan of the lighter yellow curry, which I believe has a chickpea base, and is a little milder than the other.

teh “o” ais limau – $3.50

I originally intended to order a teh ais but must have mispronounced it. No matter though, this was refreshing and a great palette cleanser, and Tim ordered another milo ais to share, since I drank most of his first one ^^;;

After recent renovations, Mamak has doubled in size. We visited on Wednesday, just as they reopened, and noted, the queues are just as long as ever, even with the increased efficiency and seating. If that’s not an indicator of a restaurant’s popularity, I don’t know what is. There’s no denying that Mamak is totally in especially with people out for a quick meal before a night out on town, or even for a late night supper after a night out on the town. Service is quick and efficient once the queue has been navigated, so get there early, as they don’t take bookings. The only negative thing I can say about Mamak is that the staff wear Crocs (=p)…but then, we never said the staff had to be fashionable, did we? ;)
