Nazimi - Veggie Stars

Lunch with Ms. Jen has lately been characterised by Japanese, then dessert, a trend I whole-heartedly approve of. It’s always fun looking for affordable, decent Japanese food, especially with the aid of the food-blogging community of Sydney. Today’s pick was just opposite QVB on York St, a small discreet basement diner popular amongst business people.

When we arrived, a little after 1pm, Nazimi was absolutely packed, but the apologetic waitress was happy to set up a table for us outside to wait and peruse the menu.

Nazimi - Chicken Katsu Udon

The wait for a table was short, the wait for our food even shorter, so that made all of us very happy, except me, because I had eaten a chicken pie half an hour previously. Yeah, it wasn’t the greatest of moves.

Tim’s chicken katsu udon was full of unami, and pretty starfish shaped cut vegetables, as shown in the first picture, thus making for a very happy food photographer, and a sad Tim as his katsu got soggy in the soup while waiting. ^^;; The noodles were a little firmer and chewier than other places, but otherwise very satisfactory.

Nazimi - Sushi

For $15, this sushi and teriyaki chicken lunch set seemed excellent value for Ms Jen.

Nazimi - Teriyaki Chicken

Service was attentive and friendly, with our jug of water being topped up whenever the water level hovered too low. The surrounds were uplifted by Japanese paintings of seasonal trees, though our attention was caught by a scroll with two cute Pokemon-resembling owls – Is there a Pokemon called ‘Hoothoot’? (And am I starting to show my juvenile-ness?)

Nazimi - Soft Shell Crab Roll

The spider roll serving was generous, and presented cleverly on a mayonnaise spider web. A little something more was probably needed to elevate this dish, perhaps a dash of chilli and soy sauce, or more generous hand with the mayonnaise, but otherwise, the soft shell crab was crisp, juicy and not oily.

Nazimi - Spider web

The ‘spider’, that gives spider rolls their name. Eeek! (Partial eek at the epic-failed focus on this photo too)
